It’s that time of year again! Beyond holiday parties and festive lights, getting in the holiday spirit for swimmers also means a fast short course meters meet to celebrate the season. The Germantown Maryland Masters are pleased to provide that opportunity for swimmers across the region by hosting the 5th Annual Solstice Meet, a short course meters competition that will be taking place on Saturday, December 2nd at the Germantown Indoor Swim Center.

Germantown Masters has hosted its Solstice Meet for 5 years.

The Solstice Meet combines fast swimming with fun times and a good cause, and this year is no exception. Based on feedback from previous participants, warmups will start slightly year, at 2:30 PM, and will end earlier, at 3:00 PM, to allow for a speedier finish to the competition.

The Germantown Swim Center is known for being a fast pool, and frequently hosts a number of championship meets, including the 2017 Washington Metro High School Swim & Diving Championships. The 8-lane aquatic facility, which will be configured as a 25-meter course and has a depth ranging from 7 to 17 feet, has also been the site of multiple national records by Olympians such as Katie Ledecky. For warmup purposes, a second lap pool will also be available for continuous use during the meet, and ample spectator seating is available above the pool as well as on deck.

The Solstice Meet includes several aspects that add to the uniqueness of the event. The 800-meter freestyle relay and the 400-meter individual freestyle events are on the menu, offering a rare opportunity for national top 10 short course meters rankings – although the 400 freestyle will be limited to 24 swimmers, so register quickly if you want to enter this event! And if you have three other teammates, start training for the 5th Annual (unofficial) Crescendo Relay, which pairs the 4 best swimmers of each team – any gender, any age – with each swimming 200, 150, 100 and 50 meters, in that order. An age and gender-weighted handicap system will encourage a level‐playing field competition among relays in any combination of men and women with both older and younger swimmers. The winning relay team will be awarded a special trophy and bragging rights for the year! Awards will also be given for 1st through 3rd places in individual and relay events and a special award will be given to the club with the highest total point score.

The ALS Association will be represented at the meet.

From its very first year, the Germantown Masters have partnered up with various organizations to combine a shared love of swimming with a contribution to a good cause. For the second year, the Solstice Meet will partner with the ALS Association, a national non-profit organization whose mission is “to lead the fight to treat and cure ALS through global research and nationwide advocacy, while also empowering people with Lou Gehrig’s Disease and their families to live fuller lives by providing them with compassionate care and support.” The ALS Association will be on deck during the competition, providing literature and information on how participants can donate to the Association or start individual fundraisers at open water events, meets or even triathlons.
